Genesis 2:8-9
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
- Trouble is always one bad decision away from you
- Here we see the Restraining principle being applied
Genesis 2:15-17
The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it . And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
Genesis 3:1-13
Restraint: Resisting temptation around us.
Question: Why put the tree of good and evil in the midst of the garden?
Answer: You cannot have authority without restraint
Exercising Restraint and
Obeying God’s Word:
- Passion for God and his Word
- Peace of God
- Presence of God
- Power of God
With Restraint Example #1: King David’s Reign
2 Samuel 8:1-15
Read 14-15 And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went. And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.
With Restraint Example #2: Joseph refraining from being tempted by Potiphar’s wife
Genesis 39:1-14
Verse 3 and 9: His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”
Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.
Without Restraint:
- Depravity
- Degradation
- Destruction
- Death
Without Restraint Ex. #1 King David’s authority taken and repentance
2 Samuel Chapter 12:1-12
Psalm 51:1 mean? KJV
Without Restraint Ex #2 Samson losing his strength (authority)
Judges 14:15-18
And Samson ‘s wife wept over him and said, “You only hate me; you do not love me. You have put a riddle to my people, and you have not told me what it is.” And he said to her, “Behold, I
have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?”
Judges 16:16-19
Verse 16-17 And when she pressed him hard with her words day after day, and urged him, his soul was vexed to death. And he told her all his heart, and said to her, “A razor has never come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother ‘s womb. If my head is shaved, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak and be like any other man.”
God Restraining
Principle Placed
on Christ
Isaiah 55:10-11
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose ,and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 42:1-4
Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.
John 5:19
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but
only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
John 12:49-50
For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment — what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has
told me.”
Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Ephesians 5:1-17

Matthew 4:1-11
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If hou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him
Matthew 26:36-42
36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. 40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
